Background

An European developer of high-quality diagnostic systems, needed a reliable cooling solution for their temperature-sensitive chemical testing reagents, which must be stored at 4-8℃. Their current chiller from a competitive supplier lacked sufficient cooling capacity, certifications, and had condensation issues.

Challenges

The medical OEM’s instruments are compact, limiting space for cooling devices. Traditional units often have
reduced cooling capacity due to size constraints. The medical OEM required a new chiller that:

  • Increased cooling capacity to at least 450W
  • Had international certifications
  • Used R290 refrigerant with low global warming potential (GWP)
  • Solved condensation issues

Solution

Boyard collaborated with the medical OEM to understand the project details, such as coolant circulation volume, initial temperature, target temperature, and cooling time. Boyard designed the BYL030PDC24 mini-chiller, increasing compressor displacement from 2.0cc to 3.0cc, boosting cooling capacity by 50%. Boyard also replaced the capillary tube with an expansion valve to address condensation.

Increased Cooling Capacity

Boyard successfully customized a mini chiller with enhanced cooling capacity for the medical OEM, occupying no additional space. The original unit’s cooling capacity was 330W, and the reagent temperature barely reached 8℃. After switching to the Boyard mini liquid chiller, the cooling capacity increased to 490W, and the reagent temperature stabilized at 5℃.

Low GWP System

As environmental concerns grow, more OEM customers are turning to refrigerants like R290. Despite its flammable and explosive nature, Boyard’s extensive experience in refrigeration helped customers transition from R134a to R290, alleviating concerns.

Easy Installation and Maintenance

Boyard considered the inconveniences faced by customers using the original chiller. By changing the air outlet direction of the condenser and repositioning the plate heat exchanger connection, the new unit can be installed without modifications to the existing system. Replacing the expansion valve sgnificantly improved the condensation issue, extending the mini chiller’s lifespan.

Compatible Driver

All Boyard mini units are equipped with a driver that allows for adjustable compressor speed. The medical OEM integrates the equipment with the cooling system, using the same master control. The PWM control protocol provided by Boyard is perfectly compatible with the customer’s control system.
